Pre Construction is a gesture of return—a re-layering of memory, texture, and time. Through clay, Bethany draws from the lands and waters of Quandamooka Country, allowing her hands to echo the shapes of place and material.
Bethany sculpts a contemporary take on middens, an ancient architecture of memory, layered with the lived time of 60,000 to 75,000 years. These sculpted remnants, once dismissed as debris and materials for colonial foundations, rise in her work as sacred archives—proof of presence, of persistence, of people who have always been here.
In reshaping these forms, Bethany breathes function into story, crafting works that do not simply sit in space but speak through it. They are monuments not of stone, but of shell and spirit—living reminders that existence cannot be erased.
