Jan Brown

Brisbane, Queensland

Jan Brown is an Australian artist who predominantly weaves sculptures using copper wire. Jan’s work connects her to the environment in which she lives, walks and travels.

Educated in Ceramics at TAFE Southbank Brisbane and Architectural Ceramics at TAFE Eagle Farm in Queensland, Jan has been in many exhibitions, galleries and won awards for her ceramic work since 1990. Her work is held in many public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

In 2010, Jan changed direction from working with ceramics to weaving with metal. This shift was driven by her travels and the need to be practical with fewer tools. As a result, the freedom enabled Jan to experiment in sculpting lighting and wall art. Jan’s work is currently held in galleries in Brisbane and Mt Tamborine, Queensland.

In February this year, Jan was a finalist in the Revival Emerging  Artist Prize 2024.  In June, she was awarded First Prize in the Brisbane Sculpture Festival winning the prestigious Shillam Award for her installation Transformation. This award will assist Jan to further explore larger forms and colour as part of her ongoing investigations into environmental art.
