Yulia Skorina leverages jewellery’s historical place as small, coveted objects to make super-charged objects of art. She personifies jewellery to act as vessels for potent relationships with inanimate matter. Her jewellery exemplifies the character of metals and methods as traces of the piece’s first relationship: between maker and matter.
“When discussing my intuitive ways of working with material, there is an analogy I return to. Rather than creating something, giving a figment of my imagination a form, the material feels more like a portal through which creatures of other realms can cross over into this world. Though their agency here is limited, they can still interact with the world through our relationships with them and the properties of the materials they inhabit.”
Yulia is a recent QCA graduate of the Jewellery & Small Objects department.
