Phillip Nielsen (he/him) is a multidisciplinary designer and creative working across architecture, interior design, drawing and ceramics between Corowa, NSW and Brisbane, QLD.
Phillip is drawn to themes of folly, humour, delight, and ridiculousness alongside functionalism. After 20 years of putting his creativity solely into Architecture, Phillip found his way to ceramics as an artistic medium in 2022. It happened by chance but within a week random follies began flowing out of his hands and into the clay. Phillip is largely self-taught (completing an 8-week hand building course in 2022) so his practise is in a constant realm of learning through testing and experimentation.
As a queer artist Phillip’s see his works as form given to his flamboyant self which at times has been held back whilst living regionally for the benefit of others. His practise is a avenue to nurture his creative self and subversively signal his queerness in what is sometimes a socially and intellectually isolating regional environment.
When creating in the studio Phillip makes from two perspectives - that of spontaneity and joy. In his work life as an architect, the shear act of design is something that is devoid of spontaneity - everything is considered and tested to minimise any chance of unknowns occurring throughout the project. Each piece of Phillips’ is a work of spontaneous creation in conversation / conflict / celebration with his functional and rational self. In pursuing this process, Phillip imbues each work with the joy that he takes in making them - often while listening and dancing to extremely camp pop music.
Phillip has works stocked in Beechworth Contemporary Art Gallery, VIC and Brunswick Street Gallery, VIC.
