Carefree and barefoot, Mona Ryder grew up gathering seashells along the shores of the sleepy seaside town of Maroochydore. All that came to an abrupt end when she was sent to complete her education at boarding school in Brisbane.
At a time when women artists were few and far between, Ryder persisted to become the highly regarded artist she is now, juggling her blossoming career with her young family. In over four decades, she has come to develop an emotionally charged and unique visual vernacular, exploring issues of motherhood, marriage, birth and rituals of domesticity. Ryder’s skillful crafting and juxtaposition of common household materials, old furniture and objects opens a dialogue with one’s relationship to the world and the objects that inhabit it.
