About the Artist - Belinda Fraser
Belinda Fraser is a visual artist and a secondary English teacher, who is currently based in Meanjin (Brisbane, Australia). Belinda’s artistic practice explores the relationships and connection of mob with Country with a focus on tactile sensory experiences. She views her work as a juxtaposition of protesting the colony and making contributions to Warrabal mob. Belinda believes that by challenging colonial records – like those of Norman Tindale, she will contribute research and repatriation of skills and knowledges back to her own children and mob.
Material
Eucalyptus branches, raffia and emu feathers
Dimensions
130cm x 25cm
Information
This brass necklace makes comment to Norman Tindale’s claim that people of Warrabal mob are extinct. The names recorded on the chain are my direct descendants, starting with Mary Ann, one of my apical ancestors, my great-grandfather Samuel, grandfather Malcolm and finishing with my mother, Donna Lamb. The surface of the pendant has a mirrored finish to encourage bad thoughts from the viewer to be reflected and given back to the viewer to protect what lies beneath – a (my) heart with the words ‘I am still here’ to remind the viewer that me and my family are still here and thriving despite Tindale’s misinformed assertions.
