Hand-carved vase (white beech)

Material
This vase was hand-carved in white beech. White beech grows mostly in rainforest on Australia's east coast. It is one of our best timbers for carving as it is reasonably soft but tightly grained and so you can carve very fine shapes without it chipping. I like to push timber into a shape you wouldn't expect from a solid material. This required a lot of control using a very fine double-bevelled Japanese carving knife for the final sections. Finished in beeswax and hempseed oil after much sanding!
