Information
The Blackwood Seat explores the tension between reverence for material and human intervention. Beginning with a single slab, it asks how much a maker should impose on timber with its own history. Inspired by the George Nakashima, this work uses inlay not to hide imperfections but to assert authorship and extend the tree’s narrative. The form suggests the chair has grown from the slab, with restrained elements inviting interaction. Innovation lies in reframing repair as expression and combining ebonised Victorian Ash with raw Tasmanian Blackwood to create contrast, positioning the work within a contemporary, narrative-driven craft practice.
Note: All available-for-purchase works exhibited in 2026 UNLEASHED+ can be collected after the exhibition closure in November.
