Based on bleached Acropora Muricata coral (Staghorn Coral) - bringing the submerged coral bleaching catastrophe to the surface. Wearable sculptures that tell the story of distressed coral and support the Great Barrier Reef Foundation with every sale.
About Rhia's collection exhibited at 2026 UNLEASHED+
Driven by the ongoing coral bleaching catastrophe affecting our reefs, I have responded with bold contemporary jewellery that platforms a hard truth about the state of our oceans. The stark white sculptural forms function as signifiers of bleached coral: not dead, but in serious distress. Using porcelain, I draw a material metaphor for coral reef ecosystems in this state of bleaching: fragile and requiring extra care. Worn on the body, the works allow viewers to imagine the endangered biological structures as extensions of themselves, cultivating empathy for the other. Ultimately, the collection invites reflection by translating reef decline research into recognisable symbols of the ocean's poor condition.
