William MacLean

Brisbane, Queensland

Instagram

William MacLean (Willo Wares) is a Brisbane-based woodworker whose playful and tactile boxes push the boundaries of form. While his pieces might appear sculptural, even impractical, at their core they are still perfectly functional.

Self-taught from his parents’ carport, William’s decade-long practice is now rooted in a humble backyard studio covered in sawdust. William sustainably sources from local Queensland sawyers to tell the story of the timber he is working with, and the natural forces that have acted upon the tree during its life cycle.

William is passionate about the memory of timber as a medium; the allure of an object having grown, lived and existed as something else before. The process of turning, carving, sanding and burning changes not only the object itself, but also the colour of his hands and scents that linger for days. Each piece is made to be felt, smelt and inspected.
