Suchness
Metro Arts | 4 Mar – 3 Apr 2027
Artist: Rick Hayward
Medium: Timber
Location: Gallery 1, Metro Arts, 97 Boundary St, West End QLD 4101
Situated at the nexus of contemporary art, contemporary craft and collectable design, this exhibition presents a new body of sculptural work that asks how individuals and communities find, apply, or create meaning in a secular, digital age.
Employing the archetype of the cabinet as a metaphoric vessel for the body, the exhibition comprises an interrelated series of sculptural cabinets as sentinels to humanity, investigating universal concerns of agency, consciousness, transcendence and perceptions of reality individually and together.
The work responds directly to the fading relevance of once-ubiquitous analogue craft practices, the diminishing role of traditional religious and spiritual frameworks in contemporary secular life and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on how we understand consciousness, connection and what it means to be human. These are questions with broad resonance beyond the visual arts sector, giving the work potential to engage audiences who might not otherwise encounter contemporary craft.
