Queensland Day: Celebrating Queensland Women in Design

Queensland Day: Celebrating Queensland Women in Design

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, as part of Queensland Day celebrations, we hosted a special event showcasing the incredible design talent in our state. Starting with a series of workshops and finishing with a thought-provoking panel discussion on "Sustainably Made Design in Queensland."

This panel brought together some of Queensland's most innovative and influential women in design to explore crucial questions about sustainability, longevity, and local production in our industry. In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass consumption, our panelists shared their unique perspectives on creating furniture and objects built to last, supporting local industries, and building a circular economy.

The discussion, moderated by interior designer Angela Spillane of Studiospillane, featured an esteemed lineup of Queensland designers and makers:

  • Clare Kennedy (Five Mile Radius)
  • Professor Beck Davis (QCAD)
  • Shari Lyon (Fluxwood Lighting)
  • Paivi Piotto (Ebb&Flow)
  • Karina Seljak (Seljak Brand)

These industry leaders shared insights into their sustainable design practices and the transformative impact of their work on Queensland's design landscape. Topics covered included innovative use of materials, supporting local supply chains, and strategies for extending product lifecycles.

This event was a significant milestone for our design community, highlighting the talent, creativity, and forward-thinking approach of Queensland's women in design. It underscored our commitment to sustainable practices and the important role designers play in shaping a more environmentally conscious future.

The panel discussion was recorded and is now available for viewing below. We encourage all aspiring designers, supporters of local makers, and those interested in sustainable design to watch and be inspired by these remarkable women and their contributions to Queensland's design industry.

We thank all our panelists, attendees, and supporters for making this event a success and for their ongoing commitment to sustainable design in Queensland.
