Expo 2025 Osaka

Weaving Tomorrow’s Stories: Queensland Craft and Design

In a rare opportunity to showcase the diversity and talent of Queensland’s craftspeople on a global stage, artisan will present Queensland craft and design at Expo 2025 Osaka.

This exciting initiative is supported by a tripartite partnership between Arts Queensland, Trade and Investment Queensland, and the Australian Department of Trade and Foreign Affairs. It will see artisan exclusively host a Friends of Expo event for Japan’s cultural leaders at Osaka Expo on October 7 in the Australian Pavilion. A tour to introduce a select group of Queensland makers and designers to Japanese counterparts and institutions will precede the exhibition event, conceived to develop reciprocal residency and learning opportunities.

The Friends of Expo event will feature an exhibition of First Nations artwork, curated by artisan's inaugural Cultural Ambassador, Delvene Cockatoo-Collins. Alongside hands-on demonstrations, the event will highlight the cultural significance and innovation of Indigenous techniques, exploring how craft can be a powerful medium for storytelling and cultural exchange.

Set to take place during Sustainability Week at the expo, the event will also focus on how craftspeople and designers can contribute to practical solutions for global environmental challenges, leveraging longstanding ties between Queensland and Japan to lay the seeds for future inspiring collaborations.
