About the Artist - Teneille Nuggins

Born 1977
Language Guugu Yimithirr
Totem Walmbaar (Stingray)
Clan Dingaal Warra

Teneille was traditionally adopted into the Dingaal Warra and Bulgun Warra Clan. Growing up in Hope Vale, she fondly recalls spending time hunting and fishing with her family. “I remember when I was younger, we would go down to Bull Crossing to watch TV; it was the only place where you could pick up the channels. Many families would gather there to enjoy TV in the bush. We used to make a big bed in the back of our green Dodge truck and camp there. My grandmother and grandfather would go fishing for jewfish, and we would make soup to eat with damper,” she reminisces, highlighting the warmth of her childhood experiences. Teneille previously worked as a Sports and Recreation Coordinator for several years but left the role due to family commitments. Two years ago, she applied for a position as the Gallery Assistant, and being surrounded by her aunties and Grandmothers reignited her passion for painting. “I used to do art in school and really loved it. I did a lot of pencil drawings and made things for my children when they were growing up, but I didn’t focus much on painting. Watching my elders at the Art Centre inspired me to learn more,” she explains.

With the support of her elders, Teneille found guidance and inspiration in their teachings. “It’s funny sometimes because I’ll have my Aunty on one side of me sitting, and my other Aunty (whom I call Mum because she is closely related to me through my father) on the other side, and they’ll both tell me how to paint. We have a good laugh sometimes. I’m honored and privileged to have them guiding me through my art journey,” she reflects, expressing her deep appreciation for their mentorship as she embraces her artistic path.
