Rachel North is an Ipswich based artist educator from a rural background. Formally trained in visual arts and education, she has over 15 years experience as an arts educator. Communicating predominantly in ceramics and textile-based installation works, she interrogates the idea of landscape and how the landscape shapes, holds and hinders human memory. With a historiographical approach to forms driving conceptual development, North manipulates materials to emphasise the temporality of memory within the landscapes of their formation.

Her current practice centres on wheel-thrown multiples of varying scales that are expanded into large scale installations. This approach interrogates the form of ceramics outside of the connotations of the functional, driving it into the space of installation on its own merits. Her current post-graduate research centres on the idea of ceramics and its place within the contemporary installation zeitgeist, asking questions about ceramics as an aesthetic material. Whist not dismissing the precepts of tradition, North is interested in examining how ceramics as a material can express the temporality of human memory within the Australian landscape.
