BIRRANGAY BULILIL (leaves falling) - Hope vale Autumn collection 2025

About the Artist - Gertrude Deeral

Born 1944
Language Guugu Yimithirr
Totem Bunyja (Owl) & Walmbaar (Stingray)
Clan Dingaal Warra

Gertie is a respected leader and elder from the Dingaal clan, serving as a traditional owner of the lands surrounding Lizard Island. Born in Woorabinda in 1944, she and her family were interned there during World War II. After the war ended, Gertie and her family returned to Hope Vale when she was a young girl.

Her totems represent significant aspects of her identity: Walmbaar (stingray) from her mother's side and Bunyja (Night Owl) from her father's side. Gertie's husband has passed away, and together they were passionate about passing down their cultural knowledge to future generations.

Although Gertie only began painting recently, she is now a member of the Gamba Gamba group (senior women) at the art center. The artworks created by the Gamba women draw upon traditional Guugu Yimmithirr Warra culture, as well as contemporary and mission time histories. They possess profound cultural knowledge of family kinship systems, sacred sites, esoteric characters, and totems.

These women are dedicated to recording their language and traditional stories to preserve and share their rich heritage with younger generations.

About the Design - Yaarunh (Wattle)

“Different signs in the bush tell you the different seasons of the year, what things you can touch, what you can use, and what you can eat. When you see that the wattle is in bloom, you know that the sea foods are ready to go - the crabs and the prawns are fully grown and ready to catch. The fish, sea urchin, oysters, even the turtle are fat and really yummy. I don't know what time of year it is, but we just look at the wattle in bloom, then we know! Our grandfathers and grandmothers didn't know the months of the year - they'd just look at the flowers.”
