Jennifer Hillhouse

Brisbane, Queensland

Jennifer Hillhouse is an Australian potter based in Brisbane/Meanjin. Her primary interest is woodfiring, a passion that guides her studio practice. She actively seeks opportunities to gain experience in varied kilns and firings around Australia and has an aspiration to forge international connections to woodfirers abroad. Building her own kiln is a long term ambition.

With a background career in design and photography, Jennifer shifted her creative focus to clay in 2016, studying with Ray Cavill at Clayschool Brisbane. She now collaborates closely with Clayschool, contributing to the development of extended learning workshops, exhibitions and events.

Jennifer’s work is informed by her design sensibilities, where drawing and photography often play integral roles in the conceptual development of her forms. Her ongoing fascination with curves—an interest carried through from her design career—remains central to her practice. She approaches the curve as a dynamic element: some are restrained, others generous; some playful, others precise. Each curve carries its own tone and nuance. When grouped together, her vessels engage in a visual conversation—an undulating landscape of form, proportion, and quiet rhythm.
