Amber Winter

Brisbane, Queensland

Winter is a potter and glaze chemist; she primarily wheel-throws with porcelain clay.
She is drawn to ceramics for its wealth of learning potential: both the design and the science. The idea of alchemy, and transformation of base materials into precious and golden outcomes, being less about mysticism and more an understanding of chemistry and physics. And the pursuit of a physical treasure to which the Alchemists devoted themselves.

Her particular focus is on mark making and depth of the ceramic surface. That each pot’s surface has a memory that catalogues every decision the potter undertook and the knowledge and technique they've amassed – in the making, the trimming, the decorating and the firing.

Winter is a self-described collector, drawing inspiration from history, nature, found objects and architectural design. The forms and glazes in this collection were, in part, inspired by the rock beaches of the Uradome coast, in the Iwami region.

Winter also draws inspiration from classical ceramic decorative shapes that have persisted and recurred over time. She is particularly fascinated by the social constructivist underpinnings of ceramics as a craft and how pottery can give us a sense of connection to the greater world.
