About the workshop:

Create an endless variety of jewellery shapes by learning to hand forge copper silver or gold. Forging is an ancient technique where specialized hammers and anvils are used to shape metal.

In this workshop using just a few tools, students will learn the basic jewellery and forging techniques needed to create a beautiful sterling bangle which you will take home with you.

Students will work with copper and silver wire to explore a variety hammering techniques required to skilfully shape and transform metal.

We provide:

  • Hammers, anvils, pliers, files, ring clamps, copper and silver wire
  • Tea, coffee and snacks

What to bring:

  • Closed shoes, drawing pad and pencil, reading or magnifying glasses, permanent ink marking pen

About Gerhard Herbst:

Jewellery artist Gerhard Herbst uses jewellery and light to create inter-dimensional pieces that explore the relationship between objects and images.

Beginning his jewellery making career at age fifteen, Gerhard continued on to study both sculpture and jewellery design at San Diego State University. He subsequently developed a vibrant studio practice, and he became popularly known for his spatial forms and fluid manipulation of metal.

Gerhard has exhibited and sold his work extensively throughout Australia and North America. His Jewellery has featured at the American Craft Museum, The Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), and in museum shops at the Smithsonian Institute and the Los Angeles Museum of Art.

As an educator, Gerhard has presented workshops, short courses and masterclasses at Griffith University QCA, University of Southern Queensland and the Brisbane Institute of Art.

COVID-Safe Policy:

Please be assured artisan has well considered COVID-safe protocols regarding our workshop programming. You will be offered socially distanced seating, access to your own PPE sanitation options at your workspace, a projected display of the facilitator's workspace as they instruct the class, so no need for crowding, and a large extremely well ventilated workshop venue. Workshop Cancellation Policy:

Please note this workshop can be cancelled by artisan due to unforeseen circumstances or if minimum numbers are not reached. In this event participants will be refunded accordingly and as soon as possible.

Participant Cancellation Policy:

Workshops have limited spaces and involve preparation by the facilitator.

Bookings cancelled up to one week prior to the start of the workshop may be refunded, but a 20% non-refundable administration fee will be deducted.

Bookings cancelled within a week of the workshop commencing will NOT be refunded.

You are welcome to transfer your booking to another person prior to the workshop commencing. Please confirm this arrangement in writing to workshop@artisan.org.au.
