Welcome to the world of weaving! This beginner weaving class will have you settling into the meditative motions of creating handwoven textiles and achieve your very own contemporary handwoven wall hanging. This workshop is for lovers of all different styles – whether you love crazy bold colours, textures, muted tones, or geometric shapes, you can create a woven tapestry perfect for your home.
Your weaving guide Shawnee Dean, of Shawnee Made & Found, has years of experience and knowledge in hand-weaving techniques. She will share with you her passion for loom weaving, as well as insight into her design and artistic process. Shawnee draws inspiration from organic shapes and natural, earthy colours. She often incorporates recycled, natural and hand-dyed materials into her work.
Loom weaving, as far as we can tell, has been around for over 7000 years! In this workshop you will learn the skills and basic techniques of weaving using a traditional manual loom. You will be encouraged to embark on your own creative process, making a handwoven wall hanging that echoes your personal style and tastes.

About Shawnee Dean:
Shawnee Dean is a Gold Coast-based fibre artist. Her business Shawnee Made & Found showcases her handwoven art pieces, homewares and accessories. After completing her Bachelor of Fine Art in painting at Brisbane’s Queensland Collage of Art in 2016, Shawnee developed a strong interest in handmade textiles and tapestries and endeavoured to learn the techniques of traditional loom weaving. Shawnee has established an art practice in loom weaving and responds to natural materials and fibres, the Australian landscape, organic shapes and earthy tones. Shawnee finds her weaving and painting practices both inform and inspire each other, and strengthen her work.
Shawnee is currently studying a Masters of Teaching (secondary) and will be a qualified Visual Arts teacher by the end of 2019. After hosting weaving workshops on the Gold Coast, Shawnee is excited to share her weaving experience with the Brisbane community.
