Cindy Mills, the winner of this year's Eclectica Art Award, presents an exhibition that explores the intricate relationship between humans, marine life, and the natural world. A Bundjalung artist residing on Kabi Kabi Country (Sunshine Coast), Mills brings nearly four decades of experience as a high school art teacher to her practice as a ceramic sculptor and printmaker. Her work showcases a series of enigmatic hybrid forms that blur the lines between human and sea creature, drawing inspiration from her lifelong fascination with the ocean and its inhabitants.
The exhibition reflects Mills' deep connection to country and her childhood memories of playing in rock pools, imagining mermaids and undersea treasures. Through her strange and captivating sculptures, Mills invites viewers to contemplate the interconnectedness of all living beings and their shared environment. Her granddaughter's innocent interpretation of the works as "mermaids" adds a touching layer of intergenerational wisdom to the exhibition, highlighting the universal appeal and timeless nature of Mills' artistic vision.
