artisan launches its new Machinery Street gallery with a selection of otherworldly headdresses from the collection of Her Divine Holiness Pope Alice in recognition of her 40th year on planet Earth.
Her Divine Holiness Pope Alice was first channelled by artist Luke Roberts in the 1970s. A ‘forerunner’ to Pope Joan* and Lewis Carroll’s heroine, Pope Alice is an enigmatic alien figure embodied by Roberts in a substantial catalogue of artwork and events throughout Australia and internationally. Alice has led pilgrimages and parades, presided over queer kiss-in protests, and distributed free condoms emblazoned with the slogan POPE ALICE LOVES YOU TO LIFE!
